Looking at the world with an eye to its deeper layers; intuitively holding, revealing, and grasping its composition: all this is intrinsic to the work of Zora Berweger (b. 1981). Her practice is marked by an irrepressible curiosity, one she captures in paintings and site-specific, three-dimensional sculptures. She searches for moments and constellations in which things appear as simple as they are complex.
As with meeting on mountaintop (2018), we find a layering, a gathering, a reading-between-the-lines until materials and associations give rise to a pictorial and linguistic space of their own - one that seeks answers with a view to creating conscious, resonant spaces for other forms of being. Entities of mostly natural origin emerge from a material impulse, opening up a poetic and highly communicative perceptual space. Berweger’s thoughtful, intuitive formal language is characterized by an immediacy that evokes familiarity, echoing moments of sudden discovery: the unearthing of something previously forgotten, lost, or never before encountered.
Her works begin where rational understanding falls short. This is especially true of the moment where organic forces meet psychological and physical experience. The world of appearances, consisting of form, rhythm, color and materiality, forever permeates her oeuvre. We see it in the perception of liveliness - inherent in all matter and yet beyond the tangible. It is the vibration of things that gives her works both temporal and spatial resonance and a sense of meaningfulness. The result is a listening, a looking that draws awareness to that which so often remains hidden.
